Local abundance
- Lizard Island, Queensland, Australia: The Atlas of Living Australia has a single record of the Varied Honeyeater at Lizard Island, in July 1996 (accessed 8 April 2012). The species was also recorded at Lizard Island Research Station on 1 December 2009 and its distinctive melodic call had been heard for about a week before that. Two or more birds were present on the island for most of that summer. The species was present in the summer of 2010/11 but not 2011/12. More individuals were present in the summer of 2013/14. By 2019, the species seems to be present year-round at Lizard Island. Many individuals (more than 20) were seen at Nymph Island on 3 April 2011. ALA has two records of the species at Eagle Island in 1999 and 2000, and many records from Nymph Island (accessed 8 April 2012).
