Class Chondrichthyes

Genus Squatina
Species Squatina albipunctata

Distinguishing features

Broad, flat body with a broad, blunt snout and two relatively tall dorsal fins located posteriorly. Sandy brown in colour.

This shark grows to 1.3 m (Last and Stevens, 2009) and is normally found on the bottom. The only record of the species from the Lizard Island area (by Simon Dunn on 8 March 2022) is of an animal swimming in mid-water, at about 5 m where the bottom was more than 10 m deep. Unfortunately there is no photo of that individual. If correctly identified, it seems to be a northward range extension for the species. Fishes of Australia website lists Cairns as the northernmost record (accessed 9 Mar 2022).
