Distinguishing features
Snout shorter than diameter of eye (Fishbase accessed 16 Oct 2016). Colour varies according to host, often with an indistinct dark spot on lower tail base; found on gorgonians and sea whips (Allen et al, 2003).

Comments
Colour pattern of the photographed fish is listed by Allen et al (2003) as a variation for this species, "possibly associated with egg-guarding or other nuptial activity". There were many individuals on a single gorgonian when the photos were taken which supports this idea.
