Distinguishing features

Notes by Dr Wen-Sung Chung (20 Sep 2020) about Lizard Island specimens:

"I have closely examined the two matured Abdopus (male) which I thought perhaps two different species. After opening up their mantle to check internal structure and counting suckers, it turns out that both individuals are most likely Abdopus capricornicus (99%) based on their enlarged suckers (number and arrangement) and the number of suckers on their copulatory arm (<130 suckers) and so on. All these morphological features are well matched with the description of A. capricornicus described by Mark [Norman] and definitely not Abdopus aculeatus which has many more suckers. Although it might be still possible to have two different species, I am unable to tell at this stage using 2 specimens without any molecular data."
