Distinguishing features

This species was found to be distinct from the very similar Irrawaddy Dolphin in 2005. The first record from Lizard Island (March 2023) is observational only, based on distinctive appearance as seen at close range from a boat: no beak, brown/grey colouration, small dorsal fin set well back on body. It may have been a juvenile as length was estimated at 1.5 to 2 metres.
