Distinguishing features

Two species of Lobophora have been recorded from the Lizard Island area.

Lobophora abscondita is recently described from New Caledonia. The Lizard Island record by Georgina Nicholson is based on microscopic characters.

Lobophora variegata is likely misapplied to Indo-Pacific specimens according to Vieira et al (2014). Those authors found extraordinary diversity within the genus at nearby New Caledonia using molecular techniques, recognising four existing species (none of which were L. variegata, which is likely restricted to the Caribbean) and describing ten new species (including L. abscondita).

Currently, it seems impossible to identify Lobophora to species in the field.
