Distinguishing features

A prostrate, trailing herb with trifoliate leaves coated with fine hairs; stems with many erect hairs; small (6 mm) purple pea-flowers; short seed pods containing up to about 4 seeds.

This identification is very provisional. It was narrowed down to Desmodium using the Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants online key (accessed 1 June 2019). Several Desmodium species have been recorded from Lizard Island, including Desmodium filiforme which appears similar. That name is a synonym of Grona filiformis.

Local abundance

  • Lizard Island: Extremely abundant on and near sandy tracks at Lizard Island Research Station. It seems "weedy" but if the identification is correct, Grona filiformis is native to northern Australia (Plants of the World Online accessed 1 June 2019).
