Distinguishing features

Opposite leaves with long petioles. Base of stem buttressed and there can be looped surface roots. Flowers distinctive with 5-lobed calyx and white petals each tipped with three long lobes. Fruits are required to distinguish between Ceriops tagal (ribbed and grooved hypocotyl up to 20 cm long) and Ceriops australis (smooth hypocotyl up to 10 cm long), both of which have been recorded at Lizard Island.
